My name’s Henry. As a doctor working in Australia, I’m in the top 2% of income earners in the world. I want to help people who haven’t had the opportunities I’ve had, and I want that help to be useful and effective.
In my first year working as a doctor in 2021 I dedicated 50% of my income to effective charities. I’ve taken the Giving What We Can pledge to donate 10% of my income to effective charities for the rest of my life. At the end of the day I can earn a lot more for charity working as a doctor than I can running a bake sale or doing a fun run, and the most effective charities can transform lives for the cost of a café brunch.
I’m driven by the huge inequalities of opportunity that exists in the world, and by the ideas of Australian philosopher Peter Singer’s book and organisation The Life You Can Save, and by other champions of kindness: Fred Hollows, Catherine Hamlin and a thousand others.
The best things in life are free and the next best things are cheap. My clothes come from op-shops, I pack my own lunches, I drive a 2006 Subaru. I hope to inspire others with my message of simple living and effective giving.
